Music Review: New Radicals – Maybe You’ve Been Brainwashed
There has been many new acts thrust onto the music scene over the past couple of years and this
review will focus on one of them. The New Radicals debut effort, “Maybe You’ve Been Brainwashed Too,”
was released late in 1998.
Gregg Alexander and Paolo Degregorio lead the band and each song brings a subsequent different
array of talented musicians to it. The flavor of the disc has an obvious Rolling Stones influence, but also integrates
subtle memories of the ’60’s, ’70’s and ’80’s without losing it’s late ’90’s modern rock/pop genre.
“You Get What You Give” was an early ’99 radio hit and there is a potential plethora
of singles included here. Of the many highlights, the ditties, “In Need Of A Miracle,” “I Don’t
Wanna Die Anymore” and “Gotta Stay High” stand out. The title track is falsetto driven which interesting
sounds as if it’s being slightly sung into a cave. Another out of the ordinary tune, “I Hope I Didn’t Just
Give Away The Ending,” begins with almost 2 minutes of rambling before getting to the core of the song.
I must say, the New Radicals are upbeat and refreshing with an avant garde style. Their songs
are crafted with story lines loaded with pop culture references to historical figures, other musical artists, and
legends before them as well as drugs and clichés. After a few spins the New Radicals might just “brainwash”
you too!
